What is speedrun?
Speedrun is a recording of a player trying to finish all levels in the computer or console game as fast as possible.
How is it possible to finish a game so fast?
Well, it is a mix of things you must know or do to be so fast. You have to be a little crazy person, you must know the game pretty well and you must know exactly what you have to do (where to go, what to push, who to kill) to finish the level. So route-planning is one of the most important things (and consumes a lot of time). You should also practice your movement and know weaknesses of every enemy in the game. If you play the game long enough, you can discover that enemies will open a locked door for you (Wolfenstein 3D) or you can prepare and then kill the final boss as soon as he arrives (Portal). As you can see, there are lot of things you must do to achieve such fast times.
Is there anything more?
You can sometimes use tricks or bugs in the game (also known as "glitches") to speed up a little (or a lot). Sometimes it is possible to walk through walls to skip some parts of the game (Project IGI) or fall somewhere and then appear somewhere else. Some of those tricks look pretty awesome and make the speedrun fun to watch.
How do you do that? All the tricks and stuff...
Itīs quite simple. We just sit in front of our PCs for endless hours and try to find every single thing that can help us. This is mostly watchOutīs work in our speedruns. After the route is planned and bugs are discovered, Kwoky tries to play as fast as possible. He records some "test runs" to find out in what time the level can be done. Then he plays the level like thousand times to get the target time. Sometimes we find another bug, so the whole work must be done again... and again... and again. Kwoky sometimes tells watchOut, that he will kill him, if he finds something more :)
How do you record your runs?
If itīs possible, we use Fraps. It is a very powerful tool and makes high quality videos. It uses itīs own (almost lossless) codec so the file is not as big as uncompressed avi.
Is speedrunning limited by the hardware you use?
Yes, it definitely is. Letīs say you can play the game in average 60 frames per second. After you start recording, your framerate drops to about 25. Itīs caused by "slow" CPU (older games) or weak graphics card (newer games). Some tricks depend on framerate (Soldier of Fortune) are impossible to make while recording. Kwoky says "No hardware is powerful enough for speedrunning". So if you want to send us a new PC or some money, feel free to contact us :)
Where can I find more information?
The best speedrunning site with largest community is
speeddemosarchive.com (SDA). If you have seen Quake done Quick, Half hour Half Life or other speedrun, it probably came from there. You can also visit this Wikipedia topic about speedrunning
